Almath is a family owned business started by Alan Misson in 1996. Alan (and a Chinese professor of ceramics) began making crucibles for the University of Cambridge in the materials science department in 1994 as their then current supplier had a lead time of 3 months or more. When Alan retired from the University he bought a small high temperature furnace and the basic equipment and started producing crucibles in his garden shed. His only customer at this point was the University of Cambridge.
The internet was more widely used around this time and a web site was quickly produced for Almath (no competitors used the internet and Almath had the net to itself for a number of years). Michael and Anna Misson joined Alan in 1999/2000. Almath relocated to an industrial site near Cambridge in 2003 and is looking to expand further in the future.
